Deborah Acker is the managing director of BCG's Palo Alto, CA, office and places attorneys throughout the western states, with a focus on the Bay Area. Deborah earned her J.D. from the University of California, Davis, and externed at the United States District Court, Eastern District of California. After emphasizing intellectual property, health law, and technology transactions in law school, Deborah went on to an associate position at the well-respected IP firm, Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP. As a registered patent attorney, she prosecuted patents in the pharmaceutical, biotech, and mechanical fields. Deborah also was one of the primary litigators in a three-year ongoing patent infringement case in the Central District of California. In addition, she participated in opinion work and portfolio management for a number of international clients. While at Finnegan, she mentored summer associates and new associates and actively participated in the firm's recruiting efforts, on both the associate and partner level.
Prior to returning to law school, Deborah worked for 20 years as a certified nurse-midwife in academic teaching hospitals. In addition to functioning as a clinician for diverse populations of families, Deborah assumed clinical teaching roles, instructing and precepting residents, interns, medical students, and nursing students.
As an experienced mentor who has successfully transitioned through major career changes herself, Deborah brings a broad perspective to her work with candidates at BCG. She has a passion for helping people find their professional niches and an intuitive ability to "see" the person behind the resume. With an emphasis on coaching, organization, and detail, she supports clients through every step of transitioning to new law firms. Her goal is achieving long-term satisfying placements for all involved.
Debbie has successfully placed candidates at all levels in AmLaw 100 law firms in, Northern California, Southern California, and the Pacific Northwest. She also enjoys placing qualified candidates within niche practices, or within smaller firms.
Hiring managers at law firms recognize Deborah's in-depth knowledge of the legal market and seek her assistance in their searches for highly-qualified attorneys, both partners and associates. She handles national and international searches and understands s the subtle nuances relating to experience and management issues in a variety of practice areas.
Deborah's background and interests give her additional focus in certain areas. Having spent four years in a top-flight intellectual property law firm in the Silicon Valley, Deborah is particularly well versed in the personalities and practice groups involved in intellectual property. She has also worked extensively with corporate, finance, commercial litigation, real estate, immigration, environmental and labor and employment placements.
She enjoys counseling and placing mature professionals who are coming to the law as a second career. Deborah can provide the advice and experience to help these individuals focus their goals, understand the realities of the legal profession, and embrace a strategy of career change that is expedient and cost-effective.
Deborah also has a strong interest in women's professional issues within the law. She participates in a network of influential women attorneys in the Bay Area and enjoys advising candidates and law firms regarding factors that promote the success of women in the law.
